Personally I love them. The base companions have good storytelling, but mercs are great for fighting. Optimized Mercs are mechanically superior to most of the companions.

The only way to really do that would be to have all your companions as super simple classes, where the only real character option they have is "hit it with my stick". The main issue with Harrim isn't that he's bad, but other characters can do specific things better. Tristian is a better healer, Val is a better tank, Amiri does better melee damage, etc. #1.
