For some reason there's a "hole" in the serial number index on that site. The first field covers numbers up through the Model 1897, the second only covers from 1948 and up. The "S" series was made in the 1920's, and as stamped, you have a Model 39, not a 39-A. The Model 39 was made from 1922 to 1938 with about 40,000 to 50,000 made.

When I entered your serial number in the Marlin Data base it had nothing on it. I don't think it would be any later than 1940 or early 1941. Your Marlin Model 39 M (Mountie) was manufactured in 1980. According to a chart I have on production figures of the Models 39 A, 39 M, 39 C and 39 D ( well, all the 39 series from 1952) there were only 6 39 M's made in 1980. For some reason, production on the Model 39's was quite low for several years (1977 to 1983).
