you have to edit the settlement_trader_xx.xml (s) (in the prefabs folder) to edit protection and teleportation. I've never tried, but try commenting out (<!-- , -->) the lines first. If it works out I'll upload a video with a horde attacking a trader base.

An A18 generated world creates the primary problem of no traders existing. This concerns with A18 generated worlds (again NOT saved games) is NOT clearly communicated to users.

If you build about 500m-1km away, there shouldn't be any issues and it's not a distance that is far enough to cause you a trememdous amount of wasted time anyways. I usually always build closer to a town than a Trader, but within 2km of the nearest Trader if possible. I prefer an easily accessible loot location, over an easy loot drop off.
